APS Curriculum
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Studies is a specially designed
degree program that meets the needs of community college students
who have earned associate degrees. This program emphasizes the
practical applications of academic subjects in real world situations.
The courses are drawn from the fields of business and liberal arts.
The objective is to help students develop the leadership skills they
will need to succeed in their career (see the CSUDH Catalog as the official source for the University's policies, regulations and academic programs). The program has been available on campus for more than a decade (see

APS 300 Ethos of the Liberal Arts and the Role of Work and APS
490 Seminar in Occupational Leadership (3) will help students integrate
the information learned from the various courses and relate the
principles to their own, unique work experience.
The courses that have been selected for broadcast over cable television
and the Internet fulfill all of the requirements for student who have up to 70
units of lower division coursework to complete a Bachelor of Science in
Applied Studies with a minor in Communications.
A. Upper Division General Education - 9 Units
The following courses fulfill the CSUDH upper division General Eduation breadth requirement
SBS 318 :: Cultural Pluralism (3)
Analysis of cultural diversity and the processes of cultural interaction,
inter-ethnic relations and social integration on the community, national
and international levels.
SMT 312 :: Natural Processes and Human Welfare (3)
Impact of natural events on human activities and vice versa. Mankind’s
uneasy relationship with atmosphere, ocean and not-so-solid earth.
HUM 310 :: Key Concepts (3)
Analysis of major concept in humanistic thought and expression, e.g. the
individual and society, success and values in the U.S., death and dying,
war and society, etc.
B. Liberal Arts - 9 Units
HIS 348 :: Labor in American Society (3)
The role of labor in the political, economic, and social life of the U.S., including growth of organized labor, rival ideologies, legal decisions, and contributions of various ethnic groups, from the colonial period to the present.
ANT 336 :: Comparative Cultures (3)
The world's cultural and social diversity from a sociocultural and anthropological perspective. Variable topics include regional surveys (North America, South America, Africa, Eurasia) and/or selected themes in the study of culture.
POL 310 :: Current Issues in American Politics (3)
Analysis and critical evaluation of recent major issues, conflicts and problems in American government and institutions, Current issues might include social and health services, energy, environment, multinational corporations, military spending, taxation, political economy, criminal justice and civil rights.
C. Transition to Applied Studies - 3 Units
APS 300 :: Ethos of the Liberal Arts and the Role of Work (3)
Examines the relationship between liberal arts and sciences education and the competencies required to function effectively in social and occupational settings. Readings and assignments emphasize integration and application of skills, knowledge, perspectives, and values acquired through liberal arts and sciences. D. Applied Component - 18 Units
MGT 310 :: Management Theory (3)
Focuses on the management processes of planning, organizing, leading, and controllng;
includes discussions of social and ethical issues in business; case studies and written
reports.
MGT 312 :: Organizational Behavior (3)
Causes and consequences of individual and group behavior in business,
organizational communications, interpersonal relations, and conflict resolution; cases
and role-playing.
MKT 350 :: Principles of Marketing (3)
Survey of the marketing function, including the marketing environment and target
markets; marketing strategy with emphasis on the marketing mix; social and ethical
responsibilities of marketing.
LBR 412 :: Labor Law (3)
Legal history of the American labor movement. Survey of federal and state
laws regulating employment, collective bargaining, contract clauses, arbitration,
collective actions, lockouts, unfair labor practices and fair employment practices.
SOC 315 :: Sociology of Work (3)
Sociological analysis of work in industrial society. Examination of the
labor force, industrial organization, occupational roles, and careers. Consideration
of impact of technological change.
PSY 372 :: Industrial and Organizational Psychology (3)
Survey of the application of psychology to organizations, personnel, work
environments, buying, and selling, with particular attention to current issues.
E. Capstone Seminar - 3 Units
APS 490 :: Seminar in Occupational Leadership (3)
Prerequisites: APS 300 and Senior Standing.
Required of all applied studies majors. Interdisciplinary analysis of leadership in selected occupational areas. Creation and presentation of student portfolios demonstrating occupational accomplishment.
F. Minor in Communications - 12 Units
COM100, COM250, COM300 and COM365 are required courses. COM100 and COM250 are lower division courses that students should have completed or will have to complete at their community college and will not be broadcast.
COM 100 :: Mass Media and Society (3)
Survey of mass communications media and their effects on society. Comparative
analysis of newspapers, magazines, wire services, radio, television, motion picture, public
relations and advertising. Problems and potentials of the mass media as mirrors and molders of
society.
COM 250 :: Writing for the Media (3)
Instruction and practice in the basics of reporting and writing news for
print and electronic media.
COM 300 :: Organizational Communications (3)
Organizational theory and the role that communication plays in modern business,
industrial and governmental organizations. Case studies and reviews of the literature
in solving communication problems of complex human organizations.
COM 365 :: Introduction to Public Relations (3)
Public relations practices and principles as applied to government, education
and industry.
Electives if necessary to reach a total of 120 units.
